Nerikomi Masterclass with Aya Murata
A clay garden from Japan
January 28–31 — Braives Castle, Belgium
Over four days, Japanese artist Aya Murata will introduce participants to the Nerikomi technique, exploring the layering and combination of colored clays to create patterns within the clay itself. This workshop is designed for professional ceramicists, artists, and advanced students wishing to refine their skills and explore the creative possibilities of Nerikomi in contemporary ceramics.

Aya Murata will share her working methods, from preparing and assembling colored clays to creating patterns and developing them into three-dimensional forms. Particular attention will be paid to precision, understanding the different stages of the process, and integrating this technique into each participant's artistic practice. An internationally renowned artist based in Shigaraki, Japan, Aya Murata has developed a highly personal approach to Nerikomi. Her masterclass at Art-Marotte will coincide with her participation in Ceramic Brussels. https://ceramic.brussels/fr

Three-dimensional Nerikomi will be the focus of these four days. Participants will experiment with pattern construction, combining colored clays, and transforming them into sculptural forms. Beyond technical learning, this masterclass will offer a valuable opportunity for experimentation, exchange, and discussion within a small group of artists—a special time to share experiences, question existing approaches, and explore new avenues in one's own practice. This first masterclass could be followed in 2027 by a second session with Aya Murata, dedicated specifically to her floral Nerikomi sculptures and the more complex techniques required for their creation.
