Nerikomi Masterclass with Aya Murata
Un jardin d'argile venu du Japon
28–31 January — Château de Braives, Belgium
Over four immersive days, Japanese artist Aya Murata will introduce participants to Nerikomi, exploring the layering and combination of coloured clays to create patterns within the clay body.
This masterclass is designed for professional ceramicists, artists and advanced students who wish to develop their practice and explore the creative possibilities of Nerikomi in contemporary ceramics.
Aya Murata will share her working methods, from preparing and assembling coloured clays to building patterns and developing them into three-dimensional forms. Particular attention will be given to precision, understanding the different stages of the process, and finding ways to integrate the technique into each participant’s own artistic practice.
Internationally recognised and based in Shigaraki, Japan, Aya Murata has developed a highly personal approach to Nerikomi.
Her masterclass at Art-Marotte will coincide with her participation in Ceramic Brussels. https://ceramic.brussels/fr

Three-dimensional Nerikomi will be at the heart of these four days. Participants will experiment with pattern construction, coloured clay combinations and their development into sculptural forms.
Beyond technical learning, the masterclass will offer a valuable opportunity for experimentation, exchange and discussion within a small group of artists — a time to share experiences, question approaches and open new directions in one’s own practice.
This first masterclass may be followed in 2027 by a second session with Aya Murata, focusing specifically on her Nerikomi floral sculptures and the more complex techniques involved in their creation.
